Komp needs a connection to the internet to work. If you have bought Komp after 28th of November 2022, the 4G subscription is automatically included. Add WiFi if the mobile network is not sufficient in your area.
Komp is compatible with any standard WiFi network and needs a minimum speed of 2mbps.
What if we need to use a network that is not our own?
If you want to connect Komp to a network in a care home, we recommend forwarding this article you are currently reading to the relevant IT person. This way they can make sure Komp can get connected to the network. If the network you want to use requires you to view or interact with a web page in order to access the internet (captive portal), it’s not supported on Komp. Public networks and networks that are managed by someone other than yourself are often protected by captive portals or other restrictions that won't allow Komp to connect to the network.
Please contact the responsible IT department if the network is protected by a captive portal, so they can approve Komp to get access to the network. All they have to do is whitelist the Komp MAC address on their end. You can find the MAC address in the Komp app > Settings > About Komp.
What do we do if the network is not supported?
Our newest Komp model (EV2b) has an integrated SIM card which you can activate with 4G directly from the app. Read more about our 4G subscription here.
If you want to use a different 4G solution than what we’re providing, you can acquire a 4G dongle which you insert into one of the USB inputs on the backside of Komp. If the SIM card inside the dongle is active and without a PIN, it should connect to 4G automatically. Another way is to acquire a mobile broadband router. Which network security mechanisms does Komp support?
Komp supports open networks, and networks protected by WEP / WPA / WPA2 Personal / Enterprise. Specifically it supports WPA Enterprise 802.1x (PEAP). Networks that require http-proxy or firewalls that block all ports out of the network are not supported.

Komp will try to establish the video call using any high port number on UDP, as that will often allow the use of peer-to-peer communication. This gives better performance, and less delay.
